Anjali Grant studied in Chicago with painters Vera Klement and Thomas Mapp and conceptual artist Bob Peters. Her work has been exhibited at the Bronx River Art Gallery, Artists Space and Kentler International Drawing Space in New York. She currently lives in Bellingham, WA.
Ms. Grant’s current work translates and transposes gesture onto a two-dimensional field, using a variety of media: digital output, oils, ink, pencil, collage. A certain “openness” of perception is achieved through flatness, scale, the overlapping, raveling and unraveling of line, and expressionistic color.
There are number of elements at work: the relationship between drawing and gesture and between gesture and the body; the flat, stylized line of Chinese, Japanese and Indian art; the use of animals as subject matter, a tradition in both Eastern and Western art; the space between representation and abstraction.
